Common Typing Mistakes That Slow You Down

Common Typing Mistakes That Slow You Down

Why Small Mistakes Cost You More Than You Think

Most people who want to type faster assume the answer is to move their fingers more quickly. In practice, speed is usually lost long before that. It is lost in the small corrections that interrupt your rhythm — the glance down at the keyboard, the wrong finger reaching for a key, the backspace you press for the third time in a sentence.

Think about what a single error actually costs you. You notice it, you stop, you reach for backspace, you delete, you retype, and you find your place again. That is easily two or three seconds gone, and it breaks the flow that makes fast typing possible in the first place. A typist making one error every twenty words will often be slower than a careful typist making one every hundred, purely because of the interruptions.

The good news is that these habits are fixable, and they are much easier to fix early than after years of practice. Below are the mistakes that slow people down most often, and what to do about each one.

Looking Down at the Keyboard

This is the single biggest brake on typing speed. Every time your eyes drop to your hands, you lose your place on the screen, you lose your place in the sentence, and you lose the rhythm you had built up. Even a quick glance costs you roughly a second, and most people do it dozens of times a page.

The fix is touch typing, and it starts with the home row. Rest your left fingers on A, S, D and F and your right fingers on J, K, L and semicolon. Feel for the small raised bumps on the F and J keys — they exist precisely so you can find your position without looking.

  • Practise for ten minutes a day with your eyes fixed on the screen, not the keys.
  • If you keep cheating, drape a tea towel over your hands or use a keyboard with blank keycaps.
  • Accept that you will be slower for a fortnight. That is normal, and it passes.
  • Say the letters in your head as you type them to reinforce the mapping.

Using the Wrong Fingers

Many people never learned a proper finger assignment and instead hunt with whichever finger feels nearest. A common version of this is doing almost everything with the two index fingers while the other six sit idle. It works, up to a point, but it caps your speed permanently.

Each key has a finger that owns it. The little fingers, in particular, are badly underused — they should be handling Enter, Shift, Backspace, Tab and the outermost letters, not just hovering uselessly. Your thumbs belong on the spacebar, and only on the spacebar.

  • Return every finger to its home key after each keystroke. Drifting hands are the root of most mis-typed letters.
  • Use the opposite hand's Shift key for capitals, rather than stretching across.
  • Watch for transposed letters such as "teh" and "adn" — these are almost always a sign of fingers moving out of sequence.
  • Slow down deliberately until the correct finger becomes automatic, then build speed back up.

Resting Your Wrists in the Wrong Place

Poor wrist position does not just cause discomfort; it actively slows you down. If your wrists are planted on the desk edge or on a hard wrist rest while you type, your fingers cannot reach the upper and lower rows without straining. You end up stretching rather than moving, which is both slower and tiring.

Your wrists should float slightly above the desk while you are actively typing, with your forearms roughly parallel to the floor and your elbows at about ninety degrees. A wrist rest is for resting between bursts of typing, not for leaning on during them.

  • Keep your keyboard flat or tilted slightly away from you, never propped up at the back.
  • Check your shoulders — if they are creeping up towards your ears, your desk is too high.
  • Keep the mouse close enough that you are not reaching for it, and keep a light grip.
  • Stand up and shake out your hands every twenty minutes or so.

Mistakes in the Writing, Not Just the Typing

Some errors have nothing to do with finger placement. They come from typing what a word sounds like rather than what it is, and they survive every speed improvement you make. Watch particularly for the classic confusions: their, there and they're; your and you're; affect and effect; and practice and practise, where the noun takes the "c" and the verb takes the "s".

Small omissions are just as common — a dropped apostrophe in "it's", a missing double letter in "accommodate", a capital letter that never arrived after a full stop. These slip past because your eye corrects them automatically while reading.

  • Read your work aloud. Errors you skim past silently are obvious the moment you hear them.
  • Read a finished paragraph backwards, sentence by sentence, to break the pattern your brain expects.
  • Use a spellchecker as a safety net, but never as your only check — it will not catch "form" instead of "from".

Building Habits That Actually Stick

Accuracy first, always. A typist who types at forty words a minute with no errors will finish a document far sooner than one who types at sixty and spends the whole time correcting. Judge yourself on error rate rather than raw speed, at least for the first few months.

Practise in short, focused sessions rather than one long grind — ten to fifteen minutes daily beats an hour on Sunday. When you do make a mistake, correct it deliberately rather than hammering backspace, and then reset your fingers on the home row before continuing.

Finally, be patient with yourself. Correcting a habit you have had for years feels clumsy at first, and your speed will dip before it climbs. Give it three or four weeks of consistent practice, and the improvements will be steady, comfortable and permanent.
