Sorting out tricky sentences

• Who or whom after a preposition? If the preposition comes right before the pronoun, use whom. To whom it may concern is correct. In casual speech, many people move the preposition to the end and use who: Who are you waiting for? In formal writing, use For whom are you waiting?
• Who or whom in indirect questions? Apply the test to the clause. I don't know who/whom to call. Rephrase: I should call him. So use whom: I don't know whom to call. Who is common in casual use; whom is safer formally.
• Whoever or whomever? The same logic applies. If the word is the subject of its clause, use whoever. Whoever arrives first gets the best seat. If it is the object, use whomever. Give the prize to whomever you like.
