Why a Little Dust Does More Harm Than You'd Think

Your keyboard is one of the most-touched objects in your home, and it quietly collects everything your hands bring to it: crumbs from a biscuit eaten at the desk, flakes of skin, dust, hair, and the faint greasy film left behind by everyday typing. None of that is just a cosmetic problem. Grit works its way under the keycaps and makes keys feel spongy or sluggish, dust insulates the very components that need to stay cool, and a sticky residue can eventually cause a key to stop registering altogether. A ten-minute clean every few weeks costs you almost nothing and can add years to the life of a keyboard you actually like typing on.

Gather the Right Kit Before You Start

Getting everything together first means you are not rummaging through cupboards with a half-dismantled keyboard in front of you. You need surprisingly few things:

• A can of compressed air (often sold as a camera or electronics duster)
• A soft-bristled brush — a clean paintbrush, a makeup brush, or a dedicated keyboard brush
• A microfibre cloth, plus a couple of cotton buds for tight corners
• A small amount of isopropyl alcohol (70 per cent is ideal) or a screen-safe electronic wipe
• Optional: a keycap puller and a small bowl for screws or keycaps

Just as important is what you avoid. Skip household surface sprays, bleach-based wipes, furniture polish and anything with a strong perfume — they leave a film that attracts more dust. Never spray liquid directly onto the keyboard, and never, under any circumstances, put a keyboard in the dishwasher or soak it in water. Even a tiny amount of liquid reaching the circuit membrane or the logic board can kill it permanently.

Start Dry: Crumbs and Dust First

Always begin with the dry stage. Liquid plus loose grit equals a paste you then have to scrub out of the gaps, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid.

Unplug the keyboard from your computer, or shut the laptop down completely and unplug the charger. Turn the keyboard upside down over a bin and give it a gentle shake, side to side rather than up and down. You will be surprised how much falls out. Then tilt it to roughly 75 degrees and use the compressed air in short, sharp bursts, working along each row. Hold the can upright — tilting it can spit propellant onto the keys — and keep the nozzle about 15 centimetres away. Long continuous blasts simply push dust deeper, so use many short ones.

Next, loosen whatever is clinging on with the soft brush, sweeping along the rows and letting the debris fall away. Finish with a dry microfibre cloth across the surface, and use a cotton bud dipped in a little isopropyl alcohol to lift grime from the channels between key clusters.

Wiping Away Finger Grease and Grime

Once the dry work is done, you can deal with the shine that builds up on the most-used keys. Dampen — do not soak — a corner of your microfibre cloth with isopropyl alcohol or use a pre-moistened electronic wipe. Wring it out so it is barely damp to the touch.

Wipe across the keycaps in one direction, then turn the cloth to a clean section and go over the surface again. Pay attention to the space bar, the return key and the letters your fingers rest on most. Let everything air-dry for a few minutes before plugging it back in — alcohol evaporates quickly, but patience here protects the electronics.

If your keyboard has glossy printed legends, test a single key in an inconspicuous spot first. Some cheaper keycaps have lettering that can soften with solvent, and a gentle once-over is always safer than a hard scrub.

Laptops, Spills and Sticky Keys

Laptop keyboards need a lighter touch. You cannot remove the keycaps on most models without risking the delicate scissor mechanism underneath, so stick to short bursts of air at a shallow angle, a soft brush, and a barely damp cloth across the top. Keep the laptop slightly tilted so debris falls away from the chassis rather than into the vents.

For a spill, act immediately: shut down, unplug, and tip the machine so the liquid runs out the way it came in. Do not shake it vigorously and do not reach for a hairdryer, which pushes liquid further in and can warp plastic. Leave it to dry somewhere warm and airy for at least 24 hours before switching it on. If several keys stick or stop responding afterwards, that is a job for a repair specialist rather than a cotton bud.

On a mechanical keyboard where keycaps are designed to come off, a keycap puller makes deep cleaning straightforward. Take a photo before you start, lift the caps gently, and clean the exposed plate with your brush and air. Wash plastic keycaps in lukewarm water with a drop of washing-up liquid, rinse well, and dry them completely — overnight is best — before pressing them back on.

Keeping It Clean Between Deep Cleans

A full clean every two to three months is plenty for most homes, with a quick brush and wipe every couple of weeks. A few small habits make a real difference: eat away from your desk, close the lid or cover the keyboard when you are not using it, and wash your hands before long typing sessions. Keep drinks on a coaster and slightly to the side, and never rest a mug directly above the number row. Ten minutes of care now saves you from a keyboard full of grit, sticky keys, and the sinking feeling of watching a favourite piece of kit give up on you.
